Assignment 3
Part I – 75% of assignment
Explain how it is possible for Gombrich to use examples from the work of Constable both at the beginning of the book (what puzzles are being posed and illustrated?) and the end of the book, where the last chapter has moved to expressionism. How can it be that Gombrich uses Constable both for lessons on the puzzles of representation AND for the lessons of expressionism (nonrepresentation)? Show that you know how to use the Gombrich key ideas of “schema and correction,” “making and matching,” and “the beholder’s share.”
Helpful guiding quote from Gombrich, last paragraph of part II of Chapter XI.
“The main purpose of the preceding chapters of this book, it will be remembered, was to investigate the limitations in the artist’s choice, his need for a vocabulary, and his restricted opportunities for widening the range of representational possibilities. It is the purpose of this present chapter to show why this limitation is not a weakness but rather a source of strength for art. Where everything is possible and nothing unexpected, communication must break down. It is because art operates with a structured style governed by technique and the schemata of tradition that representation could become the instrument not only of information but also expression. Having begun these chapters with Constable’s achievement, I should like in conclusion to test these results by returning to his views on art.”
Part II – 25% — Select an artist from the article, “When is a painting finished?” and show how the person’s work illustrates one or two of the Gombrich themes. You might need to get a little bit more information about the person from internet sources.
